Birding Guide

José Castaño is a Colombian biologist and specialised bird guide with more than 20 years of professional experience in ornithology, conservation and field leadership. Born and raised in Jardín, Antioquia — a colonial town set within the cloud forests of the western Andes — he grew up surrounded by one of the richest bird assemblages on the planet. His early fascination with birds naturally evolved into a lifelong commitment to conservation and field work.

He played a key role in the landmark Yellow-eared Parrot conservation programme, working first as a Field Assistant and later contributing to reserve assessment and the implementation of long-term conservation strategies. He was also a co-founder and board member of ProAves (2001–2009), helping to shape one of Colombia’s most influential conservation organisations during its formative years.

Over two decades in the field have taken José across virtually every major ecosystem in Colombia. His expertise extends far beyond species identification: he understands habitats, behaviour, seasonal movements and the cultural landscapes that shape them. This depth of knowledge allows him to anticipate conditions, adapt to challenges and consistently deliver meaningful, high-quality birding experiences.

Calm, attentive and generous with his knowledge, José combines scientific rigour with practical field intuition. For visiting birders and photographers, he brings precision, reliability and deep local insight — the kind that only comes from years spent working in Colombia’s rainforests, mountains and remote landscapes.
