CATALONIA IN WINTER
CATALONIA IN WINTER
Catalan Pyrenees, Ebro Valley & Ebro Delta
A Winter Bird Photography Journey.
Trip Overview
Northeastern Spain holds some of the most productive winter bird photography habitats in Western Europe, and this route connects three of them in a single itinerary: the Catalan Pyrenees, the Ebro Valley and the Ebro Delta.
This winter route follows a circular journey from Barcelona with an itinerary that combines specialised photography hides, field sessions and safari-style days adapted to weather, light and bird activity. Five days in the field, moving through landscapes that change completely from one zone to the next.
Rafael Armada will be with you throughout, working alongside you on your images. Composition, light, settings, the decision to wait or move on. The kind of attention that only works in very small groups and with enough time to do things properly.
Where and when?
The journey begins in the mountains, where winter creates exceptional conditions for photographing Bearded Vultures, Cinereous Vultures and Griffon Vultures against snow-covered landscapes and from specialised hides.
Further south, the dry Mediterranean valleys of the Ebro region offer a completely different photographic setting, with opportunities for species such as Black Wheatear and Bonelli's Eagle.
The final days are spent in the Ebro Delta, one of the most important wetland systems in the western Mediterranean, where vast open landscapes host large numbers of wintering birds throughout the season.
The trip runs from November to February, when shorter days and low-angle light create slower, more immersive conditions across all three zones.

Throughout the day, we move between different hotspots across the Delta, making stops as needed for lunch, refreshments and short breaks.
At the end of the day, we leave the Delta and travel back to Barcelona, a journey of approximately two hours.
