Photographing the elusive Dupont’s Lark

3 Days in the Spanish Steppes

Few places in Europe offer the same sense of space and silence as the Spanish steppes. Rolling fields, open skies, and the calls of elusive birds make this landscape a unique destination for photographers. On this short, three-day trip we focus on one of the most sought-after species of the Iberian Peninsula: the Dupont’s Lark.

Why the Dupont’s Lark?

Often heard but rarely seen, the Dupont’s Lark is one of Europe’s most enigmatic birds. Its cryptic plumage blends perfectly with the dry steppe, and its secretive behavior makes photographs hard to achieve without the right knowledge and timing. For many bird photographers, capturing this species is a highlight of their portfolio.

The song of the Dupont’s Lark is one of the most beautiful and haunting sounds of the Spanish steppes.

More than just one species…

While the Dupont’s Lark is the star, the steppe is home to a remarkable diversity of other birds that make the trip even more rewarding:

  • Little Bustard displaying in open fields

  • Pin-tailed and Black-bellied Sandgrouse in flight

  • Montagu’s Harrier quartering low over the grass

  • Calandra and Thekla Larks filling the mornings with song

This mix of species creates endless opportunities for both close portraits and atmospheric landscapes with birds in their natural environment.

A short but intense itinerary

In three days we combine targeted sessions for Dupont’s Lark with flexible time in nearby steppe areas. Early mornings and late afternoons maximize the soft light, while the middle of the day is used to move between hotspots or rest. The pace is relaxed, but the focus is sharp: quality encounters and time to work on the images you want.

Guided by photographers

Our guiding is done by bird photographers who know the species, the habitats, and how to translate each moment into a photograph. Positioning for eye-level shots, working with backlight or side light, and anticipating behavior are part of the experience.
