A tour to fall in love with the Birds of Gambia.
West Africa's colorful birdlife is magnificently represented in the small Republic of the Gambia. This ten-day trip is designed for photographers and birdwatchers seeking a complete experience in West Africa's most accessible and smallest country. Throughout the journey we will visit coastal forests, nature reserves, wetlands, and the legendary Gambia River, combining specialized hides, boat trips, and visits to sites such as Brufut, Tanji, Tendaba, Abuko, and Marakissa. A unique opportunity to discover the region's extraordinary ornithological richness and come home with memorable images.
Trip Overview
Gambia is one of the easiest gateways to West African birdlife, with over 560 species recorded in a country you can cross in a single day. Coastal forest, mangrove and river wetland sit close together, making the birding exceptionally productive for such a small area.
Travelling in a group of no more than 7 photographers, led by our specialist guide Rafael Armada, allows time to work each hide and location properly, adapting to light, tides and bird activity.
From Brufut and Tanji to the Gambia River at Tendaba and the forests of Abuko, the route covers a remarkable range of habitats in a short distance, each with its own distinctive bird species.
Where and when?
The tour starts and ends near Banjul, tracing a loop along the south bank of the Gambia River over nine days.
It begins on the coast, around Brufut, Tanji and Kartong, before heading inland through the forests of Pirang towards Tendaba, the base for exploring the river itself. From there the route pushes further upstream to Kauren and Solomon's Well, the wildest stretch of the trip, before returning to the coast to finish around Abuko and Marakissa.
The tour runs in winter, within Gambia's dry season, when birding conditions are at their best and water levels along the river make boat trips and hide photography most productive.

- Departure to Brufut Woods, one of the best-known forests on the coast, ideal for resident and migratory species. - Lunch at Tanji Bird Reserve and an afternoon photography session in the reserve. Almuerzo en la Reserva de Aves de Tanji y sesión de fotografía por la tarde en la reserva. Dinar a la Reserva d'Aus de Tanji i sessió de fotografia a la tarda a la reserva.
- Return to the hotel at sunset. Regreso al hotel al atardecer. Retorn a l'hotel a la posta de sol.
Day 2 — Kartong Bird Sanctuary Día 2 — Santuario de Aves de Kartong Dia 2 — Santuari d'Aus de Kartong
- Pick-up at 7:30 am and transfer to Kartong Bird Sanctuary. Recogida a las 7:30 a. m. y traslado al Santuario de Aves de Kartong. Recollida a les 7:30 h i trasllat al Santuari d'Aus de Kartong.
- Photography and birdwatching around lagoons, wetlands, and mangrove areas. Fotografía y observación de aves alrededor de lagunas, humedales y zonas de manglares. Fotografia i observació d'aus al voltant de llacunes, aiguamolls i zones de manglars.
- Lunch in Kartong and more birding in the afternoon. Almuerzo en Kartong y más observación de aves por la tarde. Dinar a Kartong i més observació d'aus a la tarda.

- After breakfast, visit to Pirang Forest and its shrimp farm, excellent for waterbirds and waders. - Lunch in Sitajoyeh and an afternoon photography session at the Bah Hide, specialized in shy and hard-to-spot species. - Morning boat trip along the Gambia River to photograph kingfishers, herons, ospreys, and coastal birds. - Departure for Kauren in search of Egyptian Plover, along with raptors and waders along the way. You do not need to be an expert birder or photographer. But you do need to be comfortable with full days outdoors.
