Where the tundra meets the Arctic Ocean.

The Varanger Peninsula holds one of Europe's richest concentrations of Arctic seabirds and tundra specialists, all within a landscape where taiga forest gives way to windswept, treeless tundra along the cliffs of the Barents Sea. This tour follows three key areas, Varanger Peninsula, Hornøya Island, and the North of Finland, moving from coastal cliffs and fjords through open tundra into boreal forest. That shift in habitat, right at the edge of the Arctic Ocean, is what makes this route so productive for bird photography.

Trip Overview

Varanger and the far north of Finland make up one of Europe's finest Arctic birding circuits, where taiga forest gives way to open tundra and seabird cliffs along the Barents Sea. Many of the region's specialty species are tied to a single habitat, a cliff colony, a tundra lek, a boreal feeding station, making every stage of the route different from the last.

Travelling in a group of no more than 6 participants, led by our specialist guide Rafael Armada, allows time to work each site properly, adapting to weather, light and bird activity over the 10-day route.

From the seabird cliffs of Hornøya to the open tundra of the Varanger Peninsula and the boreal forests of northern Finland, the trip crosses a remarkable range of Arctic habitats. Each landscape offers its own photographic opportunities, built around field photography at an easy pace, departing from Ivalo (IVL).

Where and when?

This 10-day tour is based in the far north of Europe, beginning and ending in Ivalo (IVL), Finland, our gateway to the Arctic. From there we head into the Varanger Peninsula, Norway's northeasternmost tundra, before crossing to Hornøya Island, one of the region's great seabird cliffs, and threading back through the boreal forests of northern Finland to close the loop.

Travelling at an easy pace with a maximum of 6 participants, the itinerary is built around field photography, moving between coastal cliffs, open tundra and taiga forest as the season and bird activity dictate. Departures run May 29 – June 8, 2027, with only two spots left on this date.
