Bernat Espluga

Birding Guide

Bernat is one of our birding guides for Barcelona and Catalonia. With a background as an evolutionary biologist and ornithologist from Tarragona, he has gained extensive experience as a birder and bird ringer across several European countries, studying the vocalisations, plumage and behaviour of a wide range of species, from passerines and raptors to waders and seabirds.

Over the years he has taken part in numerous monitoring programmes and migration ringing campaigns, including work in the Moroccan desert around Merzouga, as well as in key sites across the Iberian Peninsula such as Doñana, the Ebro Delta and the Pyrenees, and in northern Europe at Falsterbo and Uppsala in Sweden.

Bernat also contributed to the translation of the ID Handbook of European Birds (Nils van Duivendijk & Marc Guyt, Lynx Nature Books 2024) and currently works at the Catalan Ornithological Institute (ICO), in monitoring and conservation projects, including work on the endangered Aquatic Warbler.
