Birding Guide

Diego Calderón Franco is a Colombian biologist and one of the country’s most experienced Bird Guides and Tour Leaders. For more than two decades he has explored Colombia’s ecosystems in search of birds, developing a deep familiarity with the country’s birdlife. Over the years he has worked in remote regions, contributing several new bird records for Colombia and participating in the description of species new to science.

He is the founder of Colombia Birding, one of the first locally run birding companies in the country, and has guided hundreds of birders across virtually every region of Colombia, as well as in other parts of Latin America.

In the field he is known for his remarkable instinct for finding and identifying birds and for his work with digiscoping, which he uses to document bird observations that he shares through his social media. He is also an international speaker and has appeared in productions like the documentary The Birders, Birdwatching with FARC for National Geographic, the YouTube series The Birders Show, and he was in charge of the recording of bird songs for Netflix’s adaptation of One Hundred Years of Solitude.
